Bringing the State Fair to Your Home

Iowa is known for its state fair. Especially for the butter cow, entertainment and just about anything on-a-stick. Every year, there are new additions and old classics that the adventurous food on-a-stick fanatic can get their hands on. Did you know the average (and I am putting average because it can be much higher) calories in a fair food is 500-600?

Why not try to create the fair at home with some tasty but healthier options?  It is also something the whole family can do, while being creative with flavors each member likes.

Try these simple ideas:

Sandwich on-a-stick:  Alternate a hearty whole wheat great (Hy-Vee Baking Stone Whole Grain Honey Seed is my favorite) with low sodium turkey, 2% cheese cubes, lettuce and any other of your favorite veggies. Dip your sandwich in Dijon mustard or your favorite hummus.

Tomato Basil Skewers:  Alternate grape tomatoes with pearl mozzarella and fresh basil leaves. Drizzle with balsamic vinegar or light Italian salad dressing.

And for dessert, my favorite, make your own Strawberry Shortcake.

Prepare an angel food cake (or purchase at your local bakery) and cut cake into squares. Alternate the cake with whole strawberries.

For fun toppings, mix 1 container of vanilla Greek yogurt with 3 tablespoons of orange juice in a measuring cup. Drizzle the topping over the cake. Top with toasted coconut or dark chocolate shavings.

Fun fair food at home!
