Setting an Example by Setting the Table....

Now that it is summer, there are many things we fill our schedules with. We make up for lost time during the winter months and also utilize the warm weather to our advantage with outdoor activities. One thing you need to fill your schedule with during the summer months is daily family meals, right along with soccer, baseball and dance schedules.

During the school year, I hear from many families that it is too hectic to schedule family meal time. I understand how it can be hectic most days of the week. But during the summer, schedules should slow down, the kids are not in school and the sun stays out a lot longer. This is a great opportunity to really try to schedule 1 family meal a day, where everyone sits down to a meal together and talks about their day. You can even take it a step further and make the meal together.

I truly believe that if a family takes the time each day to sit down 1 time during the day together, it gives everyone a chance to connect on a personal level for 30 minutes out of a 24 HOUR day. Do you feel your family can truly take the time? Do you feel your family is worth the time to give to each other? Do you feel your family will make healthier choices if you had the option of a family meal a day?

The investment in your family is two-fold with a daily meal. You get the opportunity to know what you family is eating by preparing something homemade from your kitchen and you get to spend quality time with them. I think this is a win-win situation. In my home, we commit to 5 days a week that we have a family meal. It requires planning and preparation, but it is worth it in the end to spend a little quality time over a great meal with the ones you love.
