The POWER in PROTEIN

How much protein do you think you consume a day? 50 grams? 75 grams? On the average, a person consumes around 50-75 grams of protein a day. What does the average person need? More than 75 grams a day. Most people actually do not consume enough protein in a day.

Most of our highest protein sources do come from animals, meat, dairy, eggs, cheese are all good sources of protein. There is also protein in whole wheat/grain products legumes, soy products and pastas. For people that cannot afford the most readily available protein in animal products, you can see where some might not be getting enough.

Protein provide structure to many things in our bodies, muscle being one of them. Protein also helps maintain a healthy weight by providing satiety after food consumption. I am a big believer in having protein with every meal and snack to help maintain stable blood sugars and keep hunger levels even.

If you might not get the protein you need daily, a great filler-in is protein powders. There are many on the market, some are whey protein, soy protein, rice protein, the list is endless. My favorite is whey protein. It is readily absorbed by the body and is digested well. Right now, my dietitian pick of the month is 100% Healthy Whey. It has 22 grams of protein per scoop, the flavors are amazing, it mixes really well and it is made with stevia instead of aspartame or sucralose.

Stop by on June 23rd, from 4-6 p.m. I will be sampling some in our HealthMarket!
