Have you ever wondered?

For those of you who have heard about people with Celiac Disease, have you ever wondered what that means?

Celiac disease is a intolerance/allergy to wheat in food. What happens when these individuals consume wheat? In your small intestine there are finger-like projections that have little nubs lining them. These little nubs give us the ability to absorb almost all the nutrients we consume from food. When people with Celiac Disease consume wheat, this basically "kills off" this important little nubs. Therefore causing decrease nutrient absorption, GI distress (like diarrhea and upset tummy), and it can also cause skin rashes. Some individuals have stronger reactions, some people have minimal to no reaction. Either way, it is destroying their nubs in their small intestine.

Have you ever wondered if you have Celiac Disease? First, it is hereditary. If it runs in your family, you have a higher chance of developing it. If you are experiencing a lot of GI distress after noticeably consuming products with wheat in them, it might be time to get tested. One thing to remember, do not stop eating gluten/wheat if you are suspect of having a intolerance. When you stop consuming wheat, the symptoms and the disease will go away and make it impossible for your doctor to diagnose. Before changing your diet, please see your doctor first. This will give you the best and most accurate test results.
