"Take Me Back" Weekly Wisdom

Take Me Back Weekly Wisdom

Anyone else wish things were a little simpler when it comes to food?

You may not wish to go back to the 90's or go back to any decade of your life (let's face it the past is the past) but maybe to remember a time when things were a little less complicated. This would not include the ridiculous amount of time, hair styling tools, or gallons of hairspray I used to style my hair. I am talking about a time when we did not put so much emphasis on food.

We live in a world where complicated is cool and it is exhausting me. When did mashed potatoes become so boring and deemed an unhealthy carb that cauliflower "mash" is now considered the norm?  And I have nothing against kale as a vegetable but why is iceberg lettuce not cool anymore?

As a Registered Dietitian, I am getting tired. I am tired of food. I am tired of grocery haul photos. I'm tired of crazy recipes like cacao nib, turmeric and coconut infused almond butter bliss bites that is free of gluten, dairy, soy, is vegan and non-GMO.  I'd rather have a Toll-House chocolate chip cookie, thanks. I'm tired of extreme food photos seen on social media that no-way in hell are people eating on the regular (unless you're my friend Dave who is a food artist).

I want to go back to the days when we had a baked potato, a piece of protein, a side of green beans and a glass of milk for dinner. It wasn't fussy, complicated or food-porn worthy. It was nutrition. It gave me nutrients and energy to get through the day, learn in school, do activities and sleep. I didn't obsess or constantly think about food when it was simple.

Maybe just maybe, if we made food more approachable as Registered Dietitians, people wouldn't be so scared to approach us.
