#WeeklyWisdom and Top 5 "You Can Do Hard Things" Nutrition Noshes

Nosh One. Wisdom.

#WeeklyWisdom: You can do hard things.

When was the last time you did something really hard?

I am not talking mildly hard, like opening a jar of pickles without assistance. I'm talking giving you a headache, making you nauseous, nervous sweats, increased heart rate, burst into ugly tears - hard. Take yourself back to this moment for just second. Think of all the madness happening in your head and heart at this time. Think of how your body was reacting to "this hard thing" you were doing or contemplating. How do you feel about it now?  You got through it and you are still here today.

You can do hard things.

You can come out of the other side, remember how it changed you and still keep moving along. Hard things come in all shapes and sizes and present themselves at different stages in our lives. They are a very personal part of our journey. When we choose to face those challenges head on, we take control of what scares the shit out of us. For my friend Stacey this year, it was a half Iron Man. For my friend Carrie this week, it was deep cleaning her sons bathroom and signing up for an aerial yoga class. For me, it is always and ever will be, making big life decisions. We all place ourselves in front of tall mountains and it is only ourselves who can make the decision to climb over them.

Conversations with Anne Elizabeth Podcast featuring Registered Dietitian, Stephanie Miezin

Today’s conversation is with Stephanie Miezen, a registered dietitian who has found joy in combining culinary and sports nutrition into working for Team USA.

I found Stephanie on Instagram with a photo that caught my eye in one of my favorite cities, Colorado Springs. Then I started to look more at her feed and it is filled with amazing food photos, easy nutrition information for fueling your body and video with culinary tips from her kitchen. After making one of her recipes for dates and almond butter that she had posted, she was in Korea for the Olympics with Team USA. Stephanie has had some amazing experiences so far in culinary and sports nutrition, including traveling abroad a few times to share her expertise. I know you will enjoy learning about her journey so far.

Nosh Three. Weekly #HellYeah!

Do you ever have days where you are just so proud of what you do for a living?  Like "bursting from the seams" proud? When I attend the Iowa Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Annual Meeting each year, this is exactly how I feel. It is beyond amazing to be in a room full with Registered Dietitians. It might not sound that exciting to everyone, I get it, but to me it is two thumbs up.  The other reason I loved it even more this year is because I got to be the keynote speaker in my home state and share my passion for our profession. After going to Utah, Idaho, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Michigan, it was awesome to come home.

Always choose joy

I never do a presentation without this sweet gift from my friend Amanda. She gave this to me a year ago and now it goes with me when I do speaking engagements, which bring me so much joy.

Keynote Speaker at the 2018 Iowa Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Annual Meeting

The theme of the meeting this year was "A Field of Opportunity to Improve the Health of Iowans." All the sessions will be available at www.eatrightiowa.org to watch for CPEU credit, so if you still need some credits or are interested in the sessions, look for them in 2019. The program was pretty crafty as it resembled the Farmer's Almanac. I have always been a fan of the Farmers Almanac because my sister loved it. She got a new one every year.

Registered Dietitian friends are the best!

What was even more exciting is my dietitian friend Sylvia Klinger was there to present as well. She and I met a few years ago at a Midwest Dairy Nutrition Communicator conference. Sylvia is the queen of media and is doing such great things with nutrition education for the Hispanic community. She travels the world sharing her expertise and we were so lucky for her to be part of our meeting.

Best roast beef ever!

It was also bittersweet as I received my last certificate of service as the outgoing Marketing Chair and Media Spokesperson. Who knows, there may be a comeback after a little break. We also had the best food. It's a dietitian conference right?  There has to be amazing food! This was my favorite, the best roast beef (so happy to see beef on the menu), mashed potatoes, roasted veggies and gravy. A good, wholesome Iowa meal.

Dietitian friends are the greatest gift!

Another reason why it was so great to be presenting back in my home state, was to include my friends in my presentation. Jenny was one of the first people I met when I started my internship over almost 19 years ago and we have been friends ever since. She is the person who helped me find the job of my dreams and share her sister Stacey with me as another member of my tribe. This is why I was bursting at the seams proud of our profession, because of these kind of connections. They are priceless.

AE's Daily Hellyeah Smoothie Mix and first reviews

I have created this new thing and it is still in the infancy stages but I really love it. Every morning, I combine an Anne Elizabeth approved smoothie mix of powders to blend with milk, frozen spinach and frozen berries or cacao and mint extract. My counter top looks like a disaster with all the bags and containers on it. So....I decided to have them blended all together into one product. I was able to give out samples at our meeting and got some great feedback from some friends and people who attended the conference. Ashley, Lyndi and Anita all shared some fun photos with me too so I had to share them with you as well. It is the real deal and is really delicious, cannot wait to share it with you and the rest of the world...very soon!

5 Nutrition Noshes and Wisdom Wednesday

Nosh One. Wisdom

We made it everyone!  Spring is was officially here on Monday, woo hoo!  Which is why it was no surprise that today it snowed!  Oh Iowa.... It is ironic to me how the first day of Spring correlates with a complete shift in my mindset. The sun is out longer, my mood is more on the positive side and I get a little adventurous vibe. I want to be more active, go explore, cook more, open windows and just start letting the party in. It is also the time of year I start "cleaning" and this year is a BIG cleaning adventure encompassing everything:  my home, my closet, my food, my emails, my music, my purse, my car, my everything. I cannot wait to share with you next week week what my cleaning looks like. But for this week, I am going to share with you the party.

Nosh Two. Weekly Conversation

Sometimes I am surprised by gestures of giving. Not that I don't think I am worthy, just feeling all warm and fuzzy when someone does something so kind and thoughtful without a reason. This crazy, fun, something exhausting and empowering journey would be nothing without the undeniable kindness and support of the amazing people in my life. This microphone is a gift that makes the future bright, beautiful and damn exciting. I would love for you to listen to the conversations this microphone gets to hear by going to iTunes and picking one of the podcasts.

Pure sweetness and joy on my counter top.

I was present with members of the Iowa Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and President Christy Frese when Governor Terry Branstad declared March National Nutrition Month!

I decided after an 8 year sabbatical, I would celebrate St. Patrick's Day with my friends this year.  It was fun starting off the day with cocktail club and a traditional Irish Coffee. Jason and Kevin whipped the cream by hand in a tag-team effort. It was delicious!  I have never had a traditional one and I highly recommend experiencing this cocktail at least once in your life.

We headed to the infamous Irish bar, Sully's where I enjoyed a non-green beer.  The only thing missing in my Coors Light is my straw.

My friend Justin quickly pointed out that is what the picture was missing, so I decided the picture was missing him and I!

After Sully's we headed out into the kick-ass weather of around 65 degrees and made our way to downtown Des Moines, where we accidentally missed the parade but watched some basketball at the Hoops and Hops on Cowles Commons and Iowa Craft Beer Tent.

I lost my straw but I had these gems with me. Lucky me!  Cheers to the next time St. Patty's falls on a Friday! Then I might be ready to partake in the festivities again.

Nosh Five. What I Love Right Now

Avocados! Well I love them all the time but avocados are very hip and cool right now. If you haven't tried them in a while, you need to do it. Right now!  There are many different ways to eat avocados and I love them any and every way. My favorite is guacamole but I can eat A TON of it and avo's are still high in fat, so it's best not to over do it. Once of my favorite guac preparing tips is to make it with Siggi's Dairy plain yogurt.  Not only do you decrease the amount of fat you eat but you increase the protein and calcium.

For a simple guac:  1 container of plain Siggi's yogurt, 1 large ripe avocado and 1/2 cup of any salsa (fresh or jarred) of your choice.

Mash avocado and mix in the yogurt. Blend in the salsa and enjoy with your guacamole vehicle of choice.  My current vehicle is unsalted sweet potato chips by Terra. This does make 2 servings, so find someone sweet and share.

I am LOVING this picture. And you know what day it is!!!! My mom is in Palm Springs on vacation and riding a camel (with my Uncle John on the back), so I had to include it for things I love right now. You are awesome Ruth!

May your week be like the smile my mom has on her face!

Wisdom Wednesday

Everyday is a chance to achieve, but only if you are setting goals for yourself. You don't have to shout them to the world, but it is important to nourish yourself by aiming toward things you want for yourself. I believe it is necessary to set daily and future goals to stay alive in your life. Do not expect anyone to give you a high five or a good game for accomplishing anything, but do give props to yourself. In the end, it is you who feels the reward, it is you who believes you can do anything and it is you who is going to proud of who you become because of what you can achieve.

 Weekly Conversation

My conversation this week is with Jodi Schweiger, Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator, a wife, a mom and one of my mentors. When Jodi got out of her internship, she approached a retail business, basically cold calling them and explaining to them why they needed a registered dietitian. In her jobs to follow, she carried on this entrepreneurial spirit and has made things happen for herself professionally. Jodi's story is inspirational and noteworthy. Enjoy listening to her story on iTunes: Conversations with Anne Elizabeth: Jodi Schweiger, RD, LD, CDE

Week in Review

This past week was the amazing Iowa Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Annual Meeting. The theme was Refresh, Restore, Renew Your Passion for Nutrition. We had a great line up of speakers discussing Marketing with a Heart from Chere Bork, food safety, food waste with author and columnist Judy Barbe, changes in recommendations for dyslipidemia with Dr. Jim Painter, disordered eating, malnutrition, food donation and many other fantastic presentations. The best thing about the annual meeting is one of my dear friends Brenda, comes and spends a few days with me. We really recharge each others batteries so I feel the conference does restore my passion for nutrition in many ways.

I also received the Outstanding Dietitian of the Year award and I am very grateful for the wonderful dietitians I get to work with as a member of the Iowa Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. We have over 900 dietitians in our amazing state and I would have never met any of them without the opportunity to volunteer and be a leader for our profession.

Workout Playlist of the Week

I am enjoying these last few days of nice weather to hit the pavement without snow gear!  Daylight savings time is working itself out, slowly, with my workouts and sleep. Hope this playlist helps keep you motivated this week. The first song is my new favorite from Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness. You should check out the video, the concert scenes were taking in Des Moines at Wooly's this summer and I was there!!!! Listen to Workout Playlist of the Week by Anne Elizabeth on Apple Music

What I Love Right Now

At our annual meeting, we got some awesome swag and I had to share my 2 favorites. Mocu Kombucha is this great tasting, high probiotic powder that keeps my tummy happy and my immune system strong, especially when traveling. It is this great tasting powder that you just mix with water (in my Yeti of course).  My favorite flavor is the Pear Ginger Zing, but there are other great flavors too. The best part is the story behind the brand. I had a chance to speak with Toby, the owner of Mocu, and his quest for health is inspiring. This is a must have addition for your health.

My other favorite is a Eco Lips, a local company who makes THE BEST LIP BALMS (I have a tiny obsession with lip balms). Eco Lips is based out of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and uses only the best natural and organic ingredients in their balm. They have a new balm called their MONGO KISS™  made with cocoa butter and Mongo Oil from Africa. It is like "butter" when it hits the lips. I love it!  Eco Lips is also such a cool company, you can create your own balm. I may have a tube in the kitchen, by my bed, at work, in my car, in my gym bag....you get my drift.

Another love of this week was making homemade potato soup over the weekend. It was a beautiful weekend full of work, walks and relaxing, so soup felt like a perfect fit. Make sure to make it with love and enjoy!
