Weekly Wisdom and Part Deux of Mom/Daughter Michigan Adventure Nutrition Noshes

Nosh One. Wisdom.

Inspirational Quote by Anne Elizabeth RD.

Travel. Usually we think of travel in literal terms of a destination or a location we drive or fly to. It is a fun, scheduled thing we do to get away from the daily grind to relax.  It is never enough time.  We quickly realize how fast the time went and immediately start to long for the next time we can get away. Travel can also be thought of figuratively. We are constantly traveling in our own lives, trying to navigate through all the "stuff" we cannot get away from. The good, the bad, the complicated, the sad, the happy. It is all there, all the time and there is no destination you can escape to but there is the view of looking back. The view of seeing how far you have come during your life trek and how you have made it through all the "stuff."

This woman in this photo is my mom. I caught this photo at the perfect moment. My mom has been through a lot of "stuff" and yet she still can look at all the beautiful views around her and realize she will keep climbing. It is always worth it.

Nosh Three. Part Deux ofWeek/Adventure in Review.

Part Deux of the Mom/Daughter Michigan adventure is the best part!  I hope you will hang in there with me as I share a bunch of my favorite photos and continued story of our time on Mackinac Island. It might be possible there is over 100 photos on my phone from our trip....

Taxi Cab in Mackinac Island, Michigan

After we biked, drank and ate, we summoned the "taxi" to take us to The Grand Hotel. There is no motorized vehicles on the island, so this was our Uber to the hotel.

The Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Michigan

As you pull into the hotel, you cannot help but kind of take a step back. This hotel is huge!  Everything around the hotel is in pristine condition and the legendary front porch is aligned with beautiful red geraniums and the United States Flag.

The Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Michigan

There are Uber's going in and out of the hotel all the time. If you do not stay at the hotel, you can go and visit certain parts of the hotel and there are individuals monitoring the people going in and out. The complex is huge!  We decided we would check in and get situated and then go explore all The Grand had to offer. After 6:30 pm, all ladies and gentleman need to be dressed accordingly, no shorts or jeans are allowed on the premises, so we only had a few hours to spare.

The Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Michigan

I headed in to the front desk of the hotel and checked in. We were given our keys to our room (which were actually keys) and I was told we would be staying in the Masco Cottage and were given directions to our room. At first, I thought I heard in-correctly and asked again where we were staying. I kind of stopped in my tracks because I did not book a cottage and confirmed they had directed us to the right room. This hotel has many different rooms and different price points, so maybe that was just the name of our type of room? Off Mom and I went through the hotel to our "room."

The Masco Cottage, The Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Michigan

As we approached our "room" we see french doors with a sign above it:  Masco Cottage. We both look at eat other and slowly walk up the 5 stairs with our keys in hand in complete disbelief.

The Masco Cottage, The Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Michigan

The Masco Cottage, The Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Michigan

Holy shit, we WERE staying in a cottage.

The Masco Cottage, The Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Michigan

With both of our eyes bulging out of our heads, the key goes in and we look ahead to a fully stocked kitchen and mini library. Speechless. There were no words coming out of either of our mouths. All I could keep thinking was "I didn't reserve a cottage."

The Masco Cottage, The Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Michigan

As we ventured through the kitchen, there is a beautiful living and dining space. Beautiful colors throughout, a comfy couch and chairs, two other sets of french doors and two women who are completely besides themselves.

The Masco Cottage, The Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Michigan

As I am walking through the living and dining space, I spotted this picture and a special feeling came over me. This did not just happen by chance, this was the doing of Dad and Kate, our two missing heartbeats. I believe they were right there with us.

The Masco Cottage, The Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Michigan

That wasn't all, down the hall way we went and on our left, a huge bedroom.

With an attached colorful full bath.

Then on our right, another bedroom.

The Masco Cottage, The Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Michigan

And ANOTHER full bath.

The Masco Cottage, The Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Michigan

Straight ahead, there were stairs leading to the second level (adorned in my favorite color).

The Masco Cottage, The Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Michigan

At the top of the stairs was this Tiffany blue family room, equipped with a large flat screen TV, Wii, surround sound and the movie "Somewhere in Time" which was filmed at The Grand Hotel in 1979 starring Christopher Reeves and Jane Seymour.

The Masco Cottage, The Grand Hotel, Mackinaw Island, Michigan

To the left of the family room was another beautifully adorned bedroom.

And then to the right another full bath and bedroom.

But wait, WE DIDN'T RESERVE THE COTTAGE.

Eating Sanders Caramel Pretzels in the Masco Cottage, The Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Michigan

With my Sanders caramel and chocolate covered pretzel in hand (because I didn't have enough sweets yet that day), I called down to the front desk.

With complete confusion in my voice: "Hi, this is Anne and I am in the MASCO Cottage. However, I do not believe I should be in the cottage. We only reserved a basic room, maybe you should check to see if this is right?"  The sweet girl on the other end asks me to hold and she was going to get her manager.

The manager Ashlea Flores gets on the phone and confirms we are to be in the cottage. We had received an upgrade and to enjoy our stay. That is when I knew this was divine intervention and it was all meant to be.

The Masco Cottage, The Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Michigan

We opened another set of french doors, taking it out to the porch wrapping around the cottage. Beautiful red and white impatients and wicker chairs and loungers adorned the porch and sitting area. Off to our left was another room we curiously opened and went into.

A huge 8 person hot tub, robes and big fluffy towels all ready and waiting for us. It was unreal.

We went inside, made a couple of espressos and just sat and took it all in. What an amazing, breathtaking view.  We didn't want to leave, but we knew there was much more to explore at The Grand.

The Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Michigan

The Grand Hotel is the most vibrant and colorful hotel. The decor is elaborate and fun. Some people might say it is a little crazy or dated, but I loved it. The colors were so crazy, they all looked like they blended so well together. The entire hotel made me feel like Baby in Dirty Dancing.

The Labyrinth at The Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Michigan

Outside, there are beautiful flowers everywhere and well manicured lawns. We explored the Labyrinth, a place for meditation. Along the way was outdoor workout stations leading you through a luscious green trail adorned with trees. There is a pool the size of my small town in Iowa and a gym to get your fitness on. However, we did not make it to either because of our short time there and we wanted to just be in the cottage.

Bocce Ball at the Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Michigan

Before dinner and our 6:30 dress time, to play bocce ball on the front lawn while others around us enjoyed a game of crochet. Mom was a really good shot!

Signature Cocktail and Sunset on the Legendary Front Porch of the Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Michigan

As the sun was setting, we wanted to have a cocktail on the legendary front porch and overlooking Lake Michigan in the comfy white rocking chairs strategically placed facing forward. It was the perfect day, a comfortable 65 degrees and a light breeze, dancing the flags around in front of us. We toasted to our Michigan adventure with delicious Grand Hotel Signature cocktail and watched the sun slowly descend onto water.

Dressed for Dinner at The Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Michigan

We then headed back to the cottage, made ourselves another espresso and dressed for dinner. A 5-course dinner and breakfast buffet are usually included with your room when you stay at The Grand.

The Michigan Manhattan at The Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Michigan

We stopped by the lounge and got a before dinner drink, I indulged in the Michigan Manhanttan and then headed to the front porch for one more glimpse of the sunset before dinner.

Five Course Dinner at The Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Michigan

Dinner was lovely. We had a well orchestrated wait staff and a nice variety to choose from on the menu. There are different places to dine at The Grand but we chose the main dining room. There were quite a few people there for dinner and there was no shortage of food.

Dessert at The Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Michigan

We ended the dinner with coffee and dessert. They had my favorite Tiramisu and also my new favorite:  Grand Pecan Ball with Chocolate Sauce. This was the most delicious pecan covered vanilla ice cream with a warm chocolate sauce. I have never had so much sugar in one day in my entire life. It was great!

The Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Michigan

We were feeling pretty good after dinner, a bottle of wine and dessert. The Grand had after dinner entertainment in the ball room with a band, singing the classics. We both shared in a dance and decided the cottage and hot tub was calling our name.

The Masco Cottage, The Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Michigan

We retired to the cottage, slipped on our robes, turned on some music and enjoyed a dip in the hot tub. We didn't want to close our eyes because of how wonderful this experience was. As we finally headed to slumber, we were greeted with our beds being turned down and chocolates on our pillows.

These views were worth the climb and will forever be etched in our memories.

Nosh Four. Workout Playlist of the Week.

My workout playlist this week really encompasses our day at the Grand Hotel, this is some happy music to move to on Apple Music and Spotify

Nosh Five. What I Love Right Now.

After our day at The Grand Hotel, we ventured back to Traverse City, MI and did some exploring in this quaint town Traverse City is full of hip and cool restaurants and shops, all you have to do is walk around their downtown area and hit all the great spots. We stayed at Hotel Indigo. It was perfectly located and I highly recommend staying there. It is a very modern hotel, with a great shower and workout room. There is also a rooftop bar with great views of the lake.

Taproot Cider House, Traverse City, Michigan

A friend of mine recommended the TapRoot Cider House for a variety of local Michigan ciders. This was perfect because on this trip I realized how much I love cider beer.

Taproot Cider House, Traverse City, Michigan

They have a great menu of different brewers and flavors of cider. I got the Cider Flight and tried 4 different options (there is more than 15 different options and usually some seasonal) as well as other microbrews, bottled beer, handcrafted cocktails, house infused spirits and wine.

Taproot Cider House, Traverse City, Michigan

The vibe of Taproot is adorable, very comfort chic adorned with one of my favorite colors, cherry red. The wood feels very organic and rustic which is also a reflection of the food.

Taproot Cider House, Traverse City, Michigan

The food is focused on organic, local and happy free range livestock with menu selections titled Grazing, From the Field, Main Entrees, Pizza's and Desserts. I couldn't resist the Phat Gregory which was a local cider braised pulled pork smothered in house made cherry BBQ sauce and topped with organic cabbage slaw. I had the option of root vegetable apple slaw or Great Lakes Potato chips or Soup Du Jour, which was a potato leek. Couldn't resist anything with potatoes and leeks.

Grand Traverse Pie Company, Traverse City, Michigan

After lunch, we walked around and explored the rest of Traverse City. There are plenty of fun shops around the city and mom got a cute vest a local clothing store. Not to long after, I was determined to find a place to get some type of cherry dessert. Traverse City is known as the Cherry Capital of the World and hosts an annual National Cherry Festival at the beginning of July. Since we missed it, I wanted to get a little taste of cherries. We stopped by the Cherry Republic but this was more of gifts of salsas, candy and other goods made with cherries. I really wanted cherry pie. We stumbled upon the Grand Traverse Pie Company. As we entered the case was filled with 20 different pies, different flavors, crusts and crumbles. I chose the Grand Traverse Cherry Crumb. The lady working could tell we had never been there before because after we ordered our slice she kindly asked if we would like our pie warmed with ice cream AND whipped cream.  YESSSS PLEASE!  They bake fresh pies all day, from cherry to blueberry to mixed berry to I would have liked to have a slice of each. I also found out they ship pies from the beautiful state of Michigan, so looks like I know what we are having for dessert this holiday!

I hope you enjoyed reminiscing with me about our Mother/Daughter Michigan Adventure. If I have any advice for you:  go to Michigan, go to Mackinac Island and go experience it with someone you love!

Weekly Wisdom and Part One of Mom/Daughter Michigan Adventure Nutrition Noshes

Nosh One. Wisdom.

#lessstuffmorelife quote

This photo explains why I am all about less stuff and more life. There is not enough time on this earth to be with those you love and see all the things you want to see.

Why do we waste the most precious currency of time doing anything else?

I once was the person who acquired a lot of "stuff" only because I there were many other aspects of my life I let spiral out of control. It was a result. A result of a void in my life I was not nurturing and taking care of properly. I would get my "fix" of a little glimpse of happy by buying a new shirt or 75 lip glosses I didn't need. "Stuff" was my drug of choice.

After a lot of work, a few sad and heartbreaking happenings, I got my shit together and quit being an addict. It was liberating and it was and is scary because I knew how to deal with chaos. I would accumulate stuff and now I am learning a new way. Learning how to find contentment, embrace less worry, deal with the unknown and fill my life with people and moments, not things.

Nosh Three. Part One of Week/Adventure in Review.

Yes, this is Part One. I know, I know, Part One?  There was just so much great experiences on my adventure with my Mom, I had to split it up. I hope you enjoy the ride with me as I re-live our trip to Michigan in September. If you have never been, maybe this will get you excited to go!

Daelman's Stroopwafels!!!!

Of course, we started the trip with a great flight from Des Moines and Daelmans Stroopwafels. I think this might be why I like to fly United in the morning. There is nothing better than a cup of coffee and the gooey caramel deliciousness to start an adventure!

The Franklin Restaurant Traverse City, Michigan

We wanted to fly into Traverse City, Michigan to enjoy the drive to Mackinac Island to be able to see the countryside to the Upper Peninsula. 2 quick 1 hour flights and we landed in Traverse City. During flights, I was reading my daily National Food Holiday email and it was National Cheeseburger Day, so of course I couldn't get cheeseburgers off my mind.

The Franklin Burger Traverse City, Michigan

Before we headed out of town (because we would end our trip in Traverse City), we had to get a cheeseburger. Downtown Traverse City has a bunch of restaurants and shops (more on that in Part 2) and we chose The Franklin because of their rooftop dining and the modern tavern menu. It was the perfect fuel to start the adventure.

Best little restroom sign, ever!

I very much enjoyed the atmosphere at The Franklin as well. This restroom sign was adorable.

Well fed and ready for some cruising, we headed out of Traverse City and took Highway 31 that travels all along the coast of Lake Michigan. We were "heading up north" as the locals call it. The leaves had just started turning and I was amazed by the beautiful countryside. Michigan is truly beautiful.

World's Largest Cherry Pie Charlevoix, Michigan

About midway through the 3 hour drive, there was a sign for the World's Largest Cherry Pie in Charlevoix, Michigan. This was a must stop. I was shocked this really happened. I expected just a statue but I had no idea a real pie was made that was over 14,000 pounds with 5,000 of it being cherries. I would be in cherry heaven!

World's Largest Cherry Pie Charlevoix, Michigan

They had to build a special oven to bake the pie. Charlevoix takes their cherry pie very seriously. Since we missed cherry season in Michigan (which I will go back, don't you worry) We had to get a photo with the replica of the pie right outside of the city.

World's Largest Cherry Pie Charlevoix, Michigan

We got into Mackinac City later in the evening, just in time for dinner and sleep. I was not familiar with the difference between Mackinaw City and Mackinac Island. We found a hotel in the city to sleep and rest for the ferry trip to Mackinac Island the next day.

Shepler's Ferry Mackinac Island, Michigan

We got up bright and early the next day to make sure we got an early ferry. The ferry leaves at all times of the day, the first being 7:30 am. We got there around 8 for the 8:30 ferry and the line was already long. It was like being at Disneyland! We got our tickets with Shepler's Ferry and the process is flawless for the round trip. We park our car, they grab our luggage and since we were staying at The Grand Hotel, they would have our luggage at the hotel waiting for us. So smooth!  All we had to do was board.

Mackinac Bridge

They took us under the Mackinac Bridge that spans the Straits of Mackinac, connecting the the Upper and Lower Peninsulas of Michigan. It is also known as the Big Mac and is 5 miles long.

Ferry ride to Mackinac Island

We sat on the top deck of the ferry so we could experience the trip outside. It was a little chilly that day, I had to wear my headband as ear muffs. The brisk fall air gave us pretty rosy cheeks.

Mackinac Bridge

Mackinac Island, Michigan

We arrived to the island about 30 minutes later, walked up the dock into the city and this was our first site of Mackinac Island. It is all true!  No motorized vehicles. Your taxi is a horse and carriage or a bike. Bikes were everywhere, so were the horses (and the smell of horses, ha!).

Mackinac Island Bike Shop, Michigan

One things I really wanted to do was bike around the island. It is 8 miles around the island and we were dressed in our gear and ready to bike. One thing we should have probably done was ride a bike a few times before we were set for an 8 mile trek.

Bike Ride on Mackinac Island

It had been awhile since Mom or I had gotten on a bike. I think maybe for me it was around 4 years and probably a little longer for mom. It was a bit of a learning curve.  I did like the added touch of the pink flower to help me identify my bike. There are sooo many! We took it very slow for the first couple miles so we could get use to a new but familiar activity again.

Overlooking Lake Michigan, Mackinac Island

We stopped along the way to take it all in. The water is so beautiful. I never knew!  When I think of lake water, I think of man made lakes. You cannot see the bottom and they are all sorts of weird shades of green and brown, not this beautiful crystal clear blue blanket.

Overlooking Lake Michigan, Mackinac Island

There were many stops along the 8 miles, each one providing a different view of the island of both Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.

Mackinac Island, Michigan

After we got the hang of it, 8 miles didn't seem so bad.

Riding bicycles on Mackinac Island, Michigan

Maybe ask my mom what she thought....it might be a different answer.

Miles around Mackinac Island, Michigan

Our next stop was Arch Rock. It is a geological formation of limestone made from glaciers on the Lake Huron side. It its a U.S. Historical Landmark and is in the Mackinac National State Park.

Arch Rock, Mackinac Island, Michigan

To get to the Arch, there is the Spring Trail which is 207 steps/stairs to climb to see the Arch. It is the perfect way to break up the ride and give your backside a little rest from the seat.

Arch Rock Mackinac Island, Michigan

There is a deck where you can go and stand out over the by the Arch and see down the whole side of the cliff. This photo of the water is amazing with the white peaks from the waves and the magnificent shades of blue. I couldn't believe this was Michigan.

Fort Mackinac, Mackinac Island, Michigan

As we continued the journey around the island, we passed by Fort Mackinac. It sits on top of the island. During the American Revolutionary War, the British built the fort to control the Straits of Mackinac between Lake Michigan and Huron to continue the fur trade.

Mackinac Island, Michigan

As we ended our ride, we came back through town on the other end. There are people who live on the island all year round, about 500 people. The streets and homes are adorable. We drove by the schools which were fully occupied bike racks and kids. It reminded me of the small town school I went to,  St. Mary's Regional School.

Residences on Mackinac Island, Michigan

As we closed in to the finish line and travelled down the main street, it went like this:  bike shop, restaurant, fudge shoppe annndddd....repeat. Needless to say we had worked up an appetite with our tour of the island. It was hard to decide where to go, there are many options from burgers, steaks, fish and pasta.  We dropped our bikes off and started walking. This is another great part of the island, you can walk everywhere.

Millie's on Main, Mackinac Island, Michigan

Our walk lead us to the window of Millie's on Main. The decor was cute and it was deemed Mackinac's homestyle pub. I was ready for some food (and drinks) native to Michigan.

Cheboygan Brewing Co. Blueberry Cream Ale

The menu had many different items I wanted to try, so I ordered a delicious Cheboygan Brewing Co. Blueberry Cream Ale to contemplate my order and so began my love for fruit flavored beers and ciders. It was creamy and full of blueberry flavor but not too sweet. The perfect mix of beer flavors.

Perogies at Millie's On Main, Mackinac Island, Michigan

One of the appetizers caught my eye of something I had never tried before, Perogies. Why yes I would like to try Grandma's homemade dough filled with potatoes cheese and onions, topped with bacon, cheese and sour cream. How have I never had these before?  This was the perfect refueling appetizer and was just the perfect portion size.

Sanders Chocolate and Ice Cream Shoppe, Mackinac Island, Michigan

After lunch, we couldn't pass one more ice cream or fudge shop. I had to give in. There is this term known as fudgies, of tourist who go up north and visit cities in the UP (Upper Peninsula) where there are tons of fudge and ice cream shops. I was not going to become one, but I declare it now, I am proud to be a fudgie! And oh buddy, did I ever live up to my nickname. The first time we stopped, we loaded up with ice cream:  Blue Moon (which is a must if you visit Michigan), Blueberry Cobbler and Cherry Chocolate. It was hard to choose my favorite, but Blue Moon won because it reminded me of the color of the lake. It is creamy, fruity, citrusy and spicy.  We may have also grabbed some popcorn and sweet treats and fudge. More on than in Part 2! Next week the adventure continues.....

Nosh Four. Workout Playlist of the Week.

Believe it or not, besides our bike ride, I did work on my fitness. I had to after Grandma's Perogies, Blueberry Cream Ale and Blue Moon ice cream. You can catch the first Mom and Daughter Michigan Adventure Workout Playlist on Spotify and Apple Music

Nosh Five. What I Love Right Now.

I left one menu out from my dining experience from Millie's on Main, which was my main entree, the Yooper Beef Pastie. Alright friends, I will fess up, I ordered a paste - tea. You heard me correctly, the tassel type things women use in dancing. That is not the correct pronunciation of this food. It is called a past - tea. My waitress quickly corrected me as I ordered this "up north" fare.

Millie's On Main Menu, Mackinac Island, Michigan

This hearty UP favorite, was AHHH-mazing. Comfort food, totally my style. No weird veggies floating around or bizarre things hidden in a casserole. It is what I would call a "comfort food calzone." Homemade dough of perfect thickness enveloping beef, rutabagas, potatoes and carrots, all covered in a beautiful brown gravy. When I visit up north again, this will be a recurrent order and I will now know the proper way to say it. Thank goodness it is easy to eat and that I did. All gone!

So excited to share Part 2 with you next week!
